How can I find mental health facilities that allow volunteers?
I’d like to do as much volunteer work as I can my senior year. One thing I thought would be helpful if I am to pursue a degree in Psychology is to get some first-hand looks at the field. Are there are correctional facilities or anything like that that would allow a teenager to volunteer there? How would I go about finding one of these in my area?
Thank you!
I’d first look to your local hospitals, most of them will have a psychiatry ward whether it be in the hospital or at another location. If you have any research hospitals associated with a university nearby they are always a good place to start. Otherwise go head and check at your local hospitals and see what they offer. I don’t know if most mental health facilities allow volunteers just because of the nature of many of the patients (whether it’s suicidal, violent, etc). If you can’t volunteer at a mental health facility most hospitals have a junior volunteer program for teenagers where you can volunteer at the hospital in different departments.
