Do Prison Websites Keep Inmates In Their Search System After The Inmate Dies?
I was having a conversation with my grandpa (The details are irrelevant) but he brought up his cousin, who murdered several people and went to prison, where he later died of a heart attack. He said that our family doesn’t talk about it and he won’t give me the guys last name, only his first name John and his last initial, A. He also went to Illinois State Prison. So I’ve been on their website and they have HUNDREDS of John A’s when I typed the name into the inmate search thing. I just want to know if they would keep John’s file in it after he died, so I’m not looking for something that doesn’t even exist or isn’t open to the general public. Thanks in advance!
He would not be listed as a "current inmate" if he is deceased but the booking records are public record (and should never be sealed) – you should be able to go to the clerk’s office and go through old inmate records to find him.
It seems like if he murdered several people you may be able to find the story in a newspaper or something, although at least knowing the approximate date of the murder would make this way easier.
Good luck!
The only certain way to know would be to contact the Illinois prison system and ask them. But, my best educated guess would be that he would be taken off of the inmate list. The reason why I say this is because typically a prison’s inmate list is of inmates who are "currently in custody." Since he has passed away, I’m 85% sure they would remove him from the list of inmates who are "currently in custody."
