can and how does an ex-inmate file taxes on income, when they didn’t recieve the full amount?

Income recieved went toward, housing, etc., so not all went to inmate, can they claim anything or how does that work, if they didn’t recieve the full amount?

they must report ALL income….even if it was in the form of rent, prizes or services….ALL of it.
