Can I write about an inmate in a book without his permission?

Can I write about an inmate in a book without his permission? Can I tell the story of the crimes safely as long as it is fact? Also can I give background information about them not relating to the crime itself? I assume I can if I can research it on the net where it is already printed but just want to make sure. Thxx

Yes you can. But stick to the facts. People write unauthorized biographies all the time. You just need to be careful how you do it.
