Do prison inmates have the right to kill in self defense?
I’m just curious. Do inmates have the right to use lethal force to defend themselves if threatened with lethal force by other inmates? Do they even have the right to fight back in self defense?
Yes. Although the circumstances that would rise to permit the use of lethal force would be pretty uncommon, they certainly can use self-defense. Whether it might be a violation for carrying whatever weapon was used in the killing may be another question. (But would beat a murder charge (or getting shanked) in any event.)
Yeah they do, but who is going to witness saying they fought in self defense? Another inmate…LOL that would be ratting and in prison its not acceptable.
So YES technically they have the right, but in reality they dont.

The answer is yes. All persons, including inmates whether convicted or not have the right to defend themselves in self defense. Self defense is available to anyone and being imprisoned will never bar them from defending themselves. The right of self defense is a natural right of everyone. This goes along with the right to live. If ever an inmate kills someone in the course of self defense, then he/she will be tried for that different offense.
