Lack of jobs and discrimination aside, (they're factors we can't control),
the education at least renders it's recipient more capable of doing a job and
dealing with his world.
References :
It indicates to a potential employer that although the person made a mistake, they are doing something constructive attempting to get their life back on track. Education also enlightens the inmate as to alternate means of receiving assistance rather than resulting to crime.
References :
they will have more of a chance than if they didn't get the education. would you rather the inmates just sit around all day? inside the prisons, they can do work, take vocational classes, get their GED...this is not only practical in that they are learning potentially useful skills and knowlege, while they are studying and taking classes, they aren't thinking about crime or any other nonsense. they are for those few hours, productive members of society. the pride obtained from making the grades and doing the work could make them change their minds about going back to living in poverty while robbing convenient stores and wasting it on drugs. it's better than nothing. and studies are conclusive that they do help ease the recidivism rate. so if you care about lowering crime, you should care and defend programs that help stop a person from making stupid decisions in the first place.
References :
correctional officer

Education and rehabilitation would be the right thing to do. We need prison reform. The violence only creates super predators that come out more angry and corrupt than they were when they went in. It's in society's best interest to improve prison conditions. Let's face it, the politicians' get tough on crime and screw the rehab attitude has worked out really well so far, hasn't it?
