I am in Australia and I was wondering why inmates on death row have to be there for so long, sometimes for what we call life here in Australia 25 years or more? Why is this?

Inmates have to wait so long to be executed in the United States because there is such a long line queued up.

If we killed them right away no lawyer would make money trying to get the accused off of death row.

They have the right to run out their appeals. If they don’t appeal, like Tim Mcveigh, the wait is not so long.

Maybe because of corruption on both sides. DNA testing has proven that our system is so corrupt when you have prosecution attys. with big political ambitions who think that their job is just to make the charges stick to the first poor sap that they grab, while the real criminal gets away scott free. I’m as you can guess not for the death penalty, for this reason, even though I know that proven beyond a reasonable doubt some criminals (rapists, murderers, child molesters) lives should end right on the spot. But how would you like to face death for something that you didn’t do? What happened to honesty in America.

I think the first answer in this forum is quite right - the delay in execution is usually the result of appeals made by the defence - most of the times involving the unearthing of new evidence. From a pure legal (not moral) perspective, this is perhaps the main reason why the death penalty should be illegal as there might be miscarriage of justice, for example, which cannot be appealed when one is dead (obviously).

It’s what’s wrong with our country. If a jury or a judge finds you guilty, damn it, you’re guilty! I say kill ‘em on the spot, and move on to the next.
