How much jail time for possesion and intent to distribute almost 2 kg of cocaine in Texas?

I am not looking for exact numbers here. I have a family member in jail that is awating to go to court. He is loosing it in there. He is looking for some answers and so am I. I have NO IDEA of how much jail time he is looking at. All we need is a ballpark figure. Please do not respond to this question with another question. Just help us out with some estimates. 5 years? 10 years?

It depends mostly on two factors; 1) Is he charged in State Court or Federal Court and 2) if he is charged in State Court, in what county are his charges pending.

Federal Court sentencing is very complex and depends on many factors, but because the Federal Sentencing Guidelines are used, you can fairly accurately what the guideline range will be.

State Court is more difficult to predict. Possession of more than 400 grams of cocaine is 1st degree felony with a range of punishment of 10-99 years or life. If it is possession with intent to distribute it is a "super" 1st degree with a range of punishment of 15-99 or life.

More important than the range of punishment is the County you are in. The more conservative counties will impose stricter sentences.
