   There are jails in New York City and New York State. However, these jails are operated at the city and state level. If a criminal committed a federal crime, he or she need to go to federal prison.

   Also, if that person is wanted in another state, he or she most be extradited to that state where the warrant was issued.

   Jails are here. Most people when they get sent away is to Rikers Island.
   It’s a nice place to visit but you wouldn’t want to live there. ^_^

   If you watch "Law & Order" on TV, you will hear the actors talk of it.

   there has to be a place of detention because of the way the criminal justice system works. since the state of the locality are most often the ones provide punishment, the state needs a place to stick them. You can’t commit a crime a state crime in New York and be shipped to New Jersey for it unless you’ve also done something in New Jersey and they want dibs.

   Are you talking about small local jails, or large prisons? If you go into google, and write NYS prisons, you will find a list of dozens of NYS state prisons.
