As I have heard, prisons are over crowded. This may mean that a lot of people who go there, seem to be getting worse. Some may get better but overall, prison only serves as a "lock up the bad guys" solution and not "correct the bad guys" solution.
What I mean by correct is influence. I’ve read a few researches here and there about what influences society.
In prison, I think the reason they are getting worse is because they are learning from a similar mindset or a worse mindset. Another bad thing, the guards are also subject to this but at a less intensity than the prisoners.
What if, they placed music, television and regularly scheduled programs.
Television programs about good core values such as honor and has examples of honor and not only that, shows a number of people with good honor values.
Have a training program that challenges the prisoners intellectually. If they complete this program and their work is very good and talented, they may be guaranteed a job somewhere if psychologists deem them safe. Or if they are lifers, moved to another less secure prison that has "jobs for prisoners" and they get payed either in getting more privileges or with better cells and food.
All prisons should have the regularly scheduled positive media
The reason why all this is because there are two main factors that influences inmates.
– Who’s the "coolest" "baddest" "hardcore" one in there. In other words, who is the alphamale.
– They see or believe that society around them sees them as the dangerous bad guy and places and that places a "brandish" on him.
Regular media that counter-acts this thinking style of "who’s got more kills in the bag" or "Who’s the more baddest" is something that does not include anything to do with the opposite sex, nothing to do with competition in terms of anything physical and just about anything at all that would trigger this.
Basically, a media about core values or stories of inspiration. A person who is a prison will be depressed to certain extents. Depression is one of the key aspects of people who act out.
Question: Should countries approach correctional facilities differently?
Correctional facilities main goal is punishment, and some of them do have all the things you mentioned but few take advantage of it and a large percentage would rather hone their skills for when they get out. Giving lifers who have nothing to lose a less secure setting so they could work would also give them a setting where they could cause all types of havoc, you are correct that some changes need to be made as does the court system. Too many people are sentenced to prison when they could accomplish more with them ny putting them on probation and requiring school, counseling, and a work program where they could be trained, until they prove that they are not going to change them lock them up in a facility where they are not in a situation better than they had on the street. Some people commit more crimes because they consider a prison record as some kind of badge of honor.
