Are Missouri Department of Corrections officers allowed to carry a weapon off duty?

Hi, I was in one of my criminal justices classes the other day and we got to talking about the differences between corrections officers and police officers. One of the things we discussed was if corrections officers in missouri are allowed to carry a concealed weapon off duty. I know that police officers are allowed to pretty much carry a concealed firearm anywhere including government buildings. Do corrections officers have the same right? Also are they allowed access to firearms that are usually restricted to law enforcement?

In most states, I believe Missouri included, corrections officers are not always commissioned Police Officers, although there may be some commissioned Police Officers who work as corrections officers.

Being a ‘correction officer’ does not give you any police powers or authority, and therefore, cannot carry a weapon off duty.

The exception to that would be a corrections officer who has a Concealed Weapon Permit, or the equivalent.

Can you give me names for effective correctional facilities such as boot camps for male teens?

In the state of CA an dif possible no cost ones, but even if you have to pay…dont matter. I just want different names of possible schools like this.thank you very much!!!!!!!!!

I don’t know of any military schools out in CA for teens, but I do know of a couple of boarding schools that are perfect for helping teens to improve their behavior. I was sent to one that helped me straighten up and realize that there are consequences to all actions and to think about what I do before I do it.
Oneida Baptist Institute. If you don’t like the Religious influence, then there is also Redbird. They are both great schools that are very structured. Each student while they are there are responsible for having jobs (3:45-5:15) is an example of the hours. They have to get themselves up to get to class, they have to get to breakfast and diner on time and if they don’t then they don’t eat. There are lots of things that are positive about these schools.
OBI is in Kentucky and I believe that Redbird is too.
I know you asked about military type schools but I hope I helped anyway.

How do some inmates get special priveleges?

I’ve seen prisoners with tvs, snack boxes , headphones. I’m sure prison is still pretty tough and no where I’d want to be but some inmates are getting high also. Why are my tax dollars paying for criminals to loaf around watch tv and get high all day. Not to mention conjugal visits!! What haPpened to prison being prison?

if an inmate has family to support him, they can send him money and he then buys those items from the prison commissary at a greatly inflated price; much more than you or I could buy it at a regular store.
that is the same with clothing, toiletries and most anything a prisoner wants. they also have the opportunity, after they have been in there a while, to work to earn some money. It is very small amount but it is money THEY earn.
Your tax dollars pay for the basics; the prisoner or his family or both pay for the rest.
At least in North Dakota prison system.
As to getting high in there, well folks are real good at figuring out ways to send contraband through the mail. For every safeguard set in place to prevent that, someone gets a better idea.

Opinions on Correctional Facilities?

So, I have to do a presentation for my philosophy class on whether or not correctional facilities help or hurt. I just wanted some opinions so I can try to cover all the different viewpoints. Thanks so much for any input.

The biggest benefit to society is public safety: They help with keeping dangerous criminals off of the streets. As far as rehabilitating the inmates, the success is limited. In some estimates the recidivism rate is approximately 70%, but that is still 30% who learn how to mend their ways.

Is there incentive pay with fl dept of corrections for u.s. veterans? if so how can i find details?

I was told this for the State of Florida, not sure about other states.

FL

No, not incentive pay. There is preferential hiring for certain veterans and spouses of veterans providing you meet all other qualifications.

Question about correctional facilities?

As I have heard, prisons are over crowded. This may mean that a lot of people who go there, seem to be getting worse. Some may get better but overall, prison only serves as a "lock up the bad guys" solution and not "correct the bad guys" solution.

What I mean by correct is influence. I’ve read a few researches here and there about what influences society.

In prison, I think the reason they are getting worse is because they are learning from a similar mindset or a worse mindset. Another bad thing, the guards are also subject to this but at a less intensity than the prisoners.

What if, they placed music, television and regularly scheduled programs.

Television programs about good core values such as honor and has examples of honor and not only that, shows a number of people with good honor values.

Have a training program that challenges the prisoners intellectually. If they complete this program and their work is very good and talented, they may be guaranteed a job somewhere if psychologists deem them safe. Or if they are lifers, moved to another less secure prison that has "jobs for prisoners" and they get payed either in getting more privileges or with better cells and food.

All prisons should have the regularly scheduled positive media

The reason why all this is because there are two main factors that influences inmates.

– Who’s the "coolest" "baddest" "hardcore" one in there. In other words, who is the alphamale.
– They see or believe that society around them sees them as the dangerous bad guy and places and that places a "brandish" on him.

Regular media that counter-acts this thinking style of "who’s got more kills in the bag" or "Who’s the more baddest" is something that does not include anything to do with the opposite sex, nothing to do with competition in terms of anything physical and just about anything at all that would trigger this.

Basically, a media about core values or stories of inspiration. A person who is a prison will be depressed to certain extents. Depression is one of the key aspects of people who act out.

Question: Should countries approach correctional facilities differently?

Correctional facilities main goal is punishment, and some of them do have all the things you mentioned but few take advantage of it and a large percentage would rather hone their skills for when they get out. Giving lifers who have nothing to lose a less secure setting so they could work would also give them a setting where they could cause all types of havoc, you are correct that some changes need to be made as does the court system. Too many people are sentenced to prison when they could accomplish more with them ny putting them on probation and requiring school, counseling, and a work program where they could be trained, until they prove that they are not going to change them lock them up in a facility where they are not in a situation better than they had on the street. Some people commit more crimes because they consider a prison record as some kind of badge of honor.

Should Death Row Inmates Have The Right To Listen To Their Favorite Song Before Their Execution?

We already give them a last meal, last words and last rites so would it be wrong to give them their last song?

Imagine if you were hours away from execution, wouldn’t you want to hear your favorite song or a song that will comfort you in your last hours?

And not all death row inmates are rapists and serial killers.

No. The second they took another humans life they don’t have rights. In fact, feeding them and giving them a bed is too much IMO. They should sit in a hole and rot until they die. no food, no water, no bed.

How would one find out whether or not someone was once an inmate in a state prison?

Someone I know is claiming to have once been an inmate for 2 months in a state prison because of a restraining order being filed against him. Something in his story is missing or muttled. Would a person be sent to prison simply on having a restraining order filed against them? I think probably not.

Its actually pretty simple just look up in the clerk of courts to see if he has any court cases under his name. You can also just google his name and many times the record will pop up. You could also pay a fee to one of those online background check companies and it will come up that way. Many ladies are doing that before dating someone.

what NY state correctional facilities allow conjugal visits?

Well, I found a message thread on the PrisonTalk.com forum that addresses that issue that should be very helpful (see link, below).

Good luck!… :-D

Why do we call prisons: Correctional Facilities?

There is certainly no CORRECTING going on in there.

The few who DID leave a better person did on their own will.

So what’s with the euphemism?

We changed the name because of political correctness. This political correctness is a cancer in our society without a cure.
